Did you like this untraditional style (comic book format)? Why do you think Satrapi decided to use this style instead of the regular style?
I've not seen the film adaptation yet, but I have read the graphic novel Persepolis and enjoyed both the art and story. I also felt I ended up learning from it. Have to admit I often hear the words Iran or Iraq and think, "yeah, yeah, who's killed who today? Another car bomb, what else is new? And just how long has this fight been going on?"
Persepolis put an individual, human spin on matters for me.
As for why Satrapi choose the format, I'd have to say she was a visual communications student to begin with and later met a French comics artist. Outside that, perhaps the tale she wanted to tell worked better in a graphic format - sort of like Art Spiegelman's Maus. Comics are 'safe' and 'approachable' in a way regular books are not - but can be just as hard hitting.
