comic book subscriptions

Does anyone know why comic book companies stopped offering subscriptions?
Remember how back in the day it was every comic had one or two spots where you could buy comic subscriptions? It was like buy one get this price, buy two get this price etc? I am always thinking about opening a comic book store and want to know what happened to subscriptions? And what happened to comic book stores in general? All my cities comic stores are gone!
It's generally at comic stores you can get the subscriptions. Or if the comic book store has a club you can have series added to your file and get a membership discount.

I think most comic publishers don't do subscriptions any more because of a cost issue. It's cheaper for them to let local comic stores to handle that than for the publishers to send issues to a person's address.
