Comic Books Avengers
Suggest some Comic books?
Okay so I am proud to say that in the last month I have been hooked on comics!
But prior to this Ive been wanting to read 'Runaways' which I found issues of at a pop culture expo in Sydney..
So because I live in australia, comics are a really really unpopular hobby, because there are few places that sell them (Though I knew of a comic book store when I was a kid)
So I really wanna get started on comics..
So im looking for a few really good comic series to get hooked on, some that I can still buy fom the first issue to the current one.. doesnt matter if its finished or not.. just not a comic book thats gonna cost me a small fortune to buy (Because im starting from the first issue)
Im thinking I might read:
'Fantastic Four'
'Runaways' (I know im reading these, because I just bought half the series off of Ebay)
and maybe 'Young Avengers'
But I want some examples and some Suggestions..
and yes I know that the first Fantastic Four comic will cost alot.
Some of my favorites:
1. The Ballad of Halo Jones - There are 3 books in this series which revolve around a 50th century every woman named halo jones. The 3 books chronicle more than 10 years of her life. Book 1 takes place in the course of 1 day in the life of 18 year old halo jones and her violent and semi comical misadventures on a shopping trip. Books 2 involves halo as a stewardess on a year long voyage in space. Book 3 (set 10 years later) has halo becoming a soldier in an interstellar guerilla war.
2. The Sandman - Focuses on Dream of the Endless (the other endless being: Destiny, Death, Destruction, Despair, Desire and Delirium) who is the lord of the dream realm. One of the best graphic novels I've ever read.
3. V for Vendetta - If you saw the movie, don't think that the comic and the movie are the same thing, they are totally different. The comics much better.
4. Hellblazer - The main character John Constantine is a streetwise magician. This is a difficult comic to just sum up in a few sentences but there are demons, heaven, hell, magic and John Constantine involved, you don't want to skip over this one. This is a continuing series which started in the late 80's so there's lot's of stuff to keep you entertained.
5. Ghost World - A more realistic series than the above mentioned, it features two friends, Enid and Rebecca, wandering more or less aimlessly through their small town criticizing pop culture and basically everything else. You see how their friendship is being stressed and how they eventually grow apart, this is an amazing comic. Even if you don't think this is your kind of thing pick it up anyway and give it a try, you won't regret it.
Also check out: Doktor Sleepless, Transmetropolitan, Y: The Last Man, and anything written by Alan Moore (he wrote The Ballad of Halo Jones and V for Vendetta listed above)

Avengers Marvel comic book fans?
Which was better - the Kang War of 1974-5 or the Kang War of 2001?
I liked the Avenger's Forever take on Kang. Interesting aspects with Kang/Iron man later on. Don't remember too much about the 1974-1975 Avenger's books, although I am sure I have read the stories. Here is Steve Englehart's take on Kang. He wrote Kang in the 1974-1975 books.

[Editor's note: As most all of you know, Steve Englehart wrote the AVENGERS during the 1970s, and AVENGERS WEST COAST during the 1980s, in addition to many other Marvel comics and related projects. He also created NIGHT MAN for Malibu and currently writes scripts for the TV program based upon his comic. Steve was asked for his thoughts on Kang, and specifically what was in his mind when he wrote Kang back in the 1970s. I don't know the current Marvel reality, but if you were Rama-Tut, and Dr. Doom, and Kang, (and Immortus?), and moved back and forth among those identities, living in super-scientific splendor one day and in the sands of Egypt the next, fighting the Avengers one day and helping the FF the next...I think you'd start to see identity as a fluid and illusory thing. Hopefully you'd still know who you were at bottom (though I'd wonder what name the guy would talk to himself with), but after that, life would be very existential.
I personally, in my heart of hearts, thought "Kang" was the weakest of the identities, in a character sense. He had amazing power, and could easily be seen as the Avengers' greatest villain (though Ultron's not bad)--I still love the idea that they could fight him for a month, beat him, and have him return two minutes later while they're lying around gasping, with him tanned, rested, and ready from two years of preparation for this next attack.
I think that because of that in the real world he'd beat them in the end; unless they killed him they couldn't stop him from overwhelming them (and even then, he'd be coming at them from non-killed times). But "Kang" lacks the deeper character bits that the other identities had. Stan gave him a girlfriend way back when, but it never went anywhere, and beyond that he was just a Bad Guy (all this subject to revision due to that amazing Kang story I haven't seen).
Part of my mind-set when I did GS AVENGERS 2 was, you start off as Rama Tut and reach the real heights as Dr. Doom. You can then go on to become Kang but you can never do anything Doom hasn't done as well or better (time travel is a shtick but doesn't make you *feel* any better than that first time you stole the Silver Surfer's power)...so eventually you tire of it all and try to set it right. Kang, then, is already past it just by being Kang, fighting off a future he feels deep down but won't admit to, and trying to keep it down by staging more and more grandiose schemes.
Geez, I do like the guy (or what he could be).
