Are superhero comics a popular comic book genre in Taiwan?
I'm trying to find info about comics in Taiwan. I am curious to know if superhero comics are a popular genre in Taiwan. I want to know about Taiwanese superheroes. I couldn't really find anyting on the web about it-can someone please help me out. Thanks.
Hi Jawen. I don't mean superheroes like Marvel or DC-I mean characters that exist in Taiwanese-made comics.
Sorry pal, superheros from Marvel or DC are just not the thing here or in Asia for that matter. Japanese manga or it's inspired subgenres (such as manhua in Taiwan) are the dominate style. Thats not to say people don't recognize certain characters- they prob know the ones that have been in films such as Superman, Batman, Joker, Fantastic 4- but outside of that they won't know all that much.
However if you modified your view a bit and searched for "manga, taiwan" then you'll get lots more results. Other key search terms for the Taiwanese manga scene: manhua, otaku, Tong-Li, moe, cosplay, fancy frontier, shonen jump, The One.
Naturally you should include "Taiwan/Taiwanese" with those terms to get more relevant results.

I want to start reading batman comics, which comic should i start with so i wont be confused?
Probably the best place to start is with the origin story of Batman. Modern Batman's origin is best found in the fantastic "Batman: Year One" by Frank Miller. His interpretation of Batman was (and still is!) extremely influential, so it's a great place to start.
From there, a good place to go is The Long Halloween, by Jeph Loeb (art by Tim Sale). It includes a lot of modern Bat-villains (Solomon Grundy, Two-Face, Catwoman, Poison Ivy, etc.), in addition to being one of my favorite stories of all time. The story is gripping and you will never guess the solution to the mystery!
The sequel to The Long Halloween, Dark Victory, isn't quite as fabulous as its predecessor, but it's still quite good. It's particularly notable for introducing the original Robin (Dick Grayson).
From there, it's all up to you. A good story to read to get familiar with more recent stories is Hush, as it was published only a few years ago. You may want to read up on the characters on your own, too, on Wikipedia or something to get a more general background. Beyond that, I can personally recommend Knightfall and Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on A Serious Earth (or whatever the full title is), but there are plenty of other great stories to be discovered. (Just as a head's-up: Most recently (early 2009), a major event in the Batman universe was the "death" of Bruce Wayne. As readers know, he wasn't actually killed, only trapped in the distant past, but as far as anyone in-universe knows, he's dead. Because of this, Dick Grayson (the original Robin, later called Nightwing) is currently Batman, with Damian Wayne (the son of Bruce Wayne and Talia al Ghul) as Robin. Tim Drake, who was Robin before Batman's "death", is now Red Robin. This isn't important if you're reading older comics first, but it's very important to remember if you pick up a recent issue of any Batman comic!)
