What bones can I "condition" and how?
I've seen on shows like "Human Weapon" and "Fight science" that Muay Thai fighters like to kick heavy bags and banana trees to "condition" their shins from the little "micro fractures"
Is this true and if so, what other bones can I "condition" and how?
I will try to keep this short and somewhat direct.
This is called "Conditioning" but not in the way you are thinking. The bone doesn't really get conditioned...Yes you develop microfractures in the bone, these heal and make the bone denser. Additionally you de-sensitize your nerves in the impact area. You don't kill the nerves, what you do is work against the reflex your brain naturally has to pull off power on techniques in order to protect you from injury. By repeated trauma to an impact area, the nerves send less pain signals, or more appropriately your brain begins to adapt to those pain signals and shuts them out more.
The same as any repetetive action causes your brain to begin to develop a autonomous reaction with them. It is the reason you can hammer harder and harder when you are able to hit the nail more and more (and have less subsequent times you miss and hurt yourself.
You are conditioning yourself to take trauma to the shins, the bone becomes denser, the nerves in the impact area become less sensitive and your brain allows you to hit harder. The bone itself doesn't really get conditioned (aside from developing a density that protects it from major bruising along the surface).
Any impact area can be "conditioned" by repeated impact trauma. But if you are smart, you do things the smart way. It is best to have an instructor and to use common sense. See how professional fighters do it.
They wrap up their hands when working on bags, then hit heavy bags, and softer things repeatedly.
A good way to start would be to say do 50 kicks on each leg on the bag to start with. Don't kick it again until you are no longer sore. Then do it again. Build it up to where you are dooing 100 kicks each leg.
Then start sparring.
But again, you need a good instructor, because otherwise you will hurt yourself more than condition anything.
But while it is called bone conditioning, or body conditioning it is actually much more complex than that. Find someone who can help you do it right or don't bother.
