Why is the medieval era reffered to as the "Dark Ages"?


And im referring mostly to western europe. Western europe was a bunch a war worshiping, barbaric pagans with thick beards and animal skins on their back. If anything the "Dark Ages" were a step up.

You should grab a few books on the subject, it is an interesting time period. It was called the dark ages before historians knew all that much about it. Much of the early books written by the Greeks had been lost, but during contact with the early Islamic world, the works were rediscovered in Islamic libraries. It is interesting to realize that once the Islamic world was a cradle of knowledge. It was the finding of this medical, mathematics and astronomy works which started the Renaissance period. In other words, the Dark Ages were so called because of lost information. They were not barbarians, but neither was their predecessors, the pagans of Europe .You are wrong to call them war worshiping barbaric pagans with beards. The erection of Stonehenge, as well as other henges and monuments attest to pagan Europe's sophistication.

What was the government during the Dark Ages?


Hey, I'm doing a project on why the term "Dark Ages" is accurate/unaccurate, and one section is on government. I haven't found very much on this. If anyone knows what their government was, that would be GREAT! And would their government be considered "dark"? Or no?

Thank you very much for any answers you might have.

The term 'Dark Ages' doesn't apply to governments or anything like that. It is applied to the period roughly 450 - 1066 by historians because so few written sources of information have survived that we can't 'see into it'. So it's accurate, although as we obtain more bits of information about the period, it'll become less accurate.

You won't find much on government as there isn't much. The best source for the whole of 'Dark Age' England is Bede, who lived in Co. Durham, and who died in 735 a.d. In his 'History of the English Church and People' (Book ii, Chapter 13) he describes King Edwin of Northumbria calling a council of his wise men in 626 a.d. to discuss whether or not they should accept the Christian faith. These councils held by a king were called 'witengemot'. There were also smaller local councils (gemots or moots) to decide things of less importance and some English place names still contain the word moot - Matlock in Derbyshire is derived from 'moot'.

From about 850, the Vikings began to settle in northern Britain and Ireland. The Vikings called their councils 'Things'. The Isle of Man legislature is still called the Tynwald (from 'thing'). Other examples, are Tynwald in Galloway, Fingay in Yorkshire, Dingwall in Orkney, etc.

These councils ('moots' and 'things') were the basis for our modern Parliament.
