Dell File Copy
File copypaste takes too long on xp?
My Dell GX-260 machine with windows xp sp3 takes too long to copypaste a file for example a 2gb file will take up to half an hour.
any help
this kind of dell machine contains highest 1gb memory. i think u have only 256 ram. and you are using a lots of softwares. what will you have to do is...
1. Uninstall all unnecessary Softwares. [start>control panel> add remove programs]
2. Increase your Virtual Memory. how?
2.1 right click on My computer>Properties>Advanced. under performance table click Settings.
2.2 On Visual Effects click on adjust for best performance. [it'll free up your memory]
2.3 then click on Advanced tab ... under Virtual Memory table click on Change. an window will open.
[you might have 80gb hard disk]
2.4 click on available free space drive. and select [radio box]"system manged size"
2.5 then select "set" and click on OK
[you may select as many drives as your wish .. just remember to select "system manged size" and "set" it...
another way is buying a new RAM.. but i think it is rare to find some old! SDRAM. oooh! another thing, your processor is Celeron so it might seems to slow.. copying from DVD or Flash drive.

Do I have to format a CD before I copy files to it?
I want to copy some pictures from my Nikon Coolpix P3 to a CD on my Dell XPS 400. The computer tells me that there is no CD in drive D.:. What does THAT mean? I have everything in place
If it is a fresh CD-R (Never burned on) contrary to what others have stated you do NOT need to format it because it will already be blank to start with. After inserting the blank CD-R your computer should automatically detect the disc and bring up a window asking what you want to do. What you should do is just open up your CD burning software and go about setting up the disc the way you want. If you do not have a burning software you can try opening up My Computer and going to the CD Drive and opening it up, what you will see is an empty window with a tool bar to the left of said window. On the top it should say Burn Items to Disc or something along that lines, drag and drop your files to the window and click the Burn to Disc icon. Viola!
I am not 100% on this but it is worth a try, hopefully it works out for you 
you want to look for the "system image" option.
this will copy EVERYTHING and pack it into a single file.
you will need either an external hard drive or a second hard drive installed and plugged in with the system image file on it.
after that you can use your recovery disk that came with your Norton Ghost package, skip through the jargon and find the "restore system from image" option.
after that, it will ask you to find the system image you want to install on the new hard drive.
open up the file location and select the system image, then go watch some TV, go shopping, or just something to pass the time (this takes some time, depending on how many files you have)
