I recommend not buying ongoing series titles, because they are almost all buildup with very little payoff (in terms of storytelling). Might as well start watching pro wrestling or soap operas. The medium excels at storytelling, but pick a story that has a beginning, middle and an end. You’ll be more fulfilled. Some characters/franchises have lots of examples of this, some have very few. Also, buy or borrow a copy of “Understanding Comics”, by Scott McCloud. Between this and “Comics and Sequential Art”, by Will Eisner, I think I could probably teach a college level class on the medium. My recommendations below are just some personal favorites. Batman stuff: Long Halloween, Dark Victory, The Dark Knight Returns, The Killing Joke Crime stuff: Sin City, Stray Bullets Fantasy stories (but not just elves and wizards and shit): Sandman, Swamp Thing, Hellblazer (the Garth Ennis runs), Bone Miscellaneous: Astro City (an ongoing, but parceled out as story arcs), nearly anything by Daniel Clowes, Acme Novelty Library, Groo, American Splendor, Dork!, Flaming Carrot Comics, anything by Will Eisner. This is a really tall order, by the way. Asking people for good comics to read is about like asking “What should I have for dinner?” There are so many possibilities.
