Back Issue Comics

Im wondering how many copies of 1 issue of comics did they have back in the 50's and 60's?
Curious to know, since comics in the 50's and 60's seem to be soo expensive for their rarity, how many copies did they have of one issue.. X-men's new series sold more then a million issues.. but nowadays im sure they have some kind of limit.. but still 100,000 copies of 1 issue is usually amazing.. even the mediocre comics get roughly 40,000.
Nowadays, I'm not sure what exactly the print run is for your average comic, but I'm reasonably sure it's HIGHER than 40 thousand - you have to take into consideration that it's a much bigger industry today than it was 50+ years ago; with stores all around grabbing 50 copies or more per title. That's a lot...
Now, as for the rarity of the older comics, you have to remember that back then, people bought them to read, not to collect. As such, they threw 'em out when they were done with them, ruined them, got coffee stains on them, colored in them, etc., etc. Parents also threw out collections (not to mention those old baseball cards!) because they thought that their kids "were too old for that crap" or something along those lines.
Couple that with the much reduced print runs, I'm guessing around the 50 thou to a hundred thousand mark, due to the fact that there weren't very many stores around who carried comic books, and the trashed books, you can see how a comic from the 50's and 60's that is in good or very good condition would be quite rare, indeed, fetching prices in the high 4 digits or even 5!
So if you're buying comics nowadays for your collection in the hopes of financing your kid's college education - I hate to burst your bubble, but those books aren't going to be worth very much compared to the comics of yesteryear, simply due to the fact that everyone and their kid brother will have a copy of their own!
