Science Fantasy
Who are your favorite characters from science fiction/fantasy?
I won't post mine until I choose a best answer, because I want to make sure the ideas come from you. Also, explain why you picked the ones you did.
I think of Science Fiction and Fantasy
as two different categories,
just grouped together in the book stores.
So here are my favorite characters from each category
In Science Fiction
1) Miles Naismith Vorkosigan
from Lois McMaster Bujold's "Vorkosigan" series,
which begins with “Barrayar”.
A brilliant man born deformed due to genetic attack on his
high born family shows brilliance and tenacity in a Military
culture that rejects him. Also traces of humor.
2) Sten
from Allan Cole & Chris Bunch's "Sten”
(or “Eternal Emperor") series,
which begins with “Sten”.
A covert military trouble shooter for a galactic empire.
A quick fast paced, action packed read.
3) Honor Harrington
from David Weber's "Honoer Harrington" series
which begins with “On Basilisk Station”
A military / space navy focused on the conflicts between
people / cultures (Space Opera)
Engaging character driven story with lots of action and
intertwined conflicts.
4) Belisarius
from David Drake & Eric Flint's "Belisarius" Series
which begins with “An Oblique Approach”
A re-make of history revolving around a general and
an intelligence sent back from the future.
5) Hari Selden
from Issac Assimov's "Foundation" series
which begins with “Foundation”
A look at the possible outcome of mankind’s expansion
into space.
6) Paul Muad'Dib
from Frank Herbert’s "Dune" series
which begins with “Dune”
A look at the conflicts and “gifts” created by a PSI giving
drug and interaction with alien worlds.
I’ve read so many Sci-Fi novels this list sort of shifts with my memory,
But these are all wonderful examples of how to do it right!!!
Fantasy
1) Bilbo Baggins
from J. R. R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit”
the precursor to “The Lord of the rings” Trilogy
A young Hobbit goes on an adventure with Dwarves to
recover a Dragon’s Horde.
2) Pug
from the Riftwar Saga
which begins with “Magician” (or “Magician: Apprentice”).
A cross dimensional war erupts in a land where castles
and magicians abound.
3) Garion
from David Eddings’ Belgariad series
which begins with “Pawn of Prophecy”.
A young boy grows into his sorcerous heritage.
